Look for a precious base metal rather than a plated alloy. Sterling silver and gold vermeil suit most people, because vermeil is a thick gold layer over sterling rather than over brass or nickel, and nickel is the usual cause of a reaction. For anyone particularly sensitive, or for earrings that stay in permanently, 14K solid gold is the safest option.

For everyday wear, most people land between a quarter and half a carat total weight, which reads as visible without dominating the ear.
